Call for applications: The Morton Winston Scholarship for Study Abroad

The Morton Winston Scholarship for Study Abroad provides scholarship support to student participation in sanctioned TCNJ study abroad programs. More specifically, the funds awarded will help economically disadvantaged students who can demonstrate financial need for international travel to study abroad and an interest in pursuing human rights and social justice issues. The scholarship was created in honor Dr. Morton Winston, a Professor of Philosophy at TCNJ, 1979-2017, who held numerous leadership positions on campus and was regarded as a voice of reason and ethical action by colleagues. He served as Director of the Alan Dawley Center for the Study of Social Justice until his death. Dr. Winston was an internationally recognized human rights scholar, educator and activist. He was a member of the editorial boards of two leading human rights journals—Human Rights Quarterly and the Journal of Human Rights. He served as chair of the national board of Amnesty International USA and has chaired the board of Social Accountability International.
To be eligible for the Morton Winston Scholarship for Study Abroad, you must be a full-time TCNJ student planning to participate in a TCNJ-sanctioned study abroad program who can demonstrate financial need and an interest in pursuing human rights and social justice issues.
Students who receive the Morton Winston Scholarship are expected to give a public presentation about their experience or project at the next Celebration of Student Achievement (CoSA) following their return from abroad.
Applications for the Morton Winston Scholarship for Study Abroad consist of three items:

One letter of recommendation from a TCNJ faculty member explaining your interest in pursuing human rights and social justice issues. Recommenders should submit their letters via email to furtadom@tcnj.edu.

A short personal essay that explains why you should be awarded the Morton Winston Scholarship. Your essay must contain:
- A header with the following information: Your name, email, major(s), the name of your faculty recommender, and (if applicable) a link to the study abroad program related to your proposal.
- A description of the study abroad program that this scholarship will support. Have you already applied to or been admitted to the program? If you have not been admitted yet, when do you expect to hear confirmation of your admission? Is this a TCNJ-sanctioned program? If so, please explain who runs this program.
- A description of your past experiences in pursuing human rights and social justice issues. Please explain how studying abroad will enhance your ability to pursue human rights and social justice issues.
- A description of your planned activities during your study abroad that are related to your pursuit of human rights and social justice issues. Please include information about the amount/length of time you will engage in these activities, where you will carry out the activities, who will supervise your work (if it will be supervised), permissions you have secured or plan to secure, etc.
- An explanation for how receiving the Morton Winston Scholarship will benefit your academic program and future goals.
- If your planned activities will involve a language other than English, please describe your preparation or capacity in that language that will enable you to carry out the activities.
- A description of your family’s economic background and explain how the scholarship support will enable you to study abroad which may otherwise be financially challenging.
- An appendix containing an itemized description of the expenditures associated with your study abroad and the total budget. [Note: See the Alan Dawley Center website for budget examples.]

A TCNJ academic transcript (official or unofficial).
Applications will be reviewed each semester. To apply in the fall, submit your application by November 1. To apply in the spring (pending available funding), submit your application by April 1.

2019 Fall: Congratulations to Ashley Gernay (Haug), our recipient of the Morton Winston Scholarship for Study Abroad. Ashley is a Secondary Education and History Major. The scholarship will support her study tour to Central Europe in January 2020 to study the Holocaust.
2018 Fall: Congratulations to Chris Loos, our recipient of the Morton Winston Scholarship for Study Abroad. Chris is a History Major and played a role in the play, Clybourne Park, Kenneth in October, 2018. The scholarship will support his study abroad in Peru in winter 2019.
2018 Spring: Congratulations to Sarah Jung, our inaugural recipient of the Morton Winston Scholarship for Study Abroad. Sarah is an Urban Education Major. The scholarship will support her study abroad in Thailand in summer 2018.
